Missouri Rep Announces Play Change

Missouri Repertory Theatre plans to present Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s Inherit the Wind , replacing Ronald Harwood’s Taking Sides. The drama is based on the 1925 Scopes "monkey trial," when John Thomas Scopes was put on trial for teaching the theory of evolution in defiance of state law.

Earlier this year, the Kansas State Board of Education voted to eliminate the requirement to teach evolution as part of the science curriculum. This vote has raised many questions in Kansas and attracted national attention to the issue.

The Rep’s artistic director, George Keathley, who will direct the play, says the Rep decided to present this play as a way to examine the issues raised by the vote. Keathley adds that the playwrights stressed the play is not about the theory of evolution versus the literal interpretation of the Bible. Rather, its major theme is the dignity of the human mind.

Inherit the Wind will run January 18 to February 6, 2000.
