Better Than Just So So

4 out of 5

Just So Stories is exactly what it sounds like: a few of Rudyard Kipling's charming fables read aloud. What makes this show special is the setting (I won't spoil it by telling you about it) and the genuine talent of the readers. There was some participatory back-and-forth with the audience at the beginning, which helped to set the mood. The stories themselves are beautifully written (in Kipling's distinctive style), and were enhanced by some first rate sound effects and "character" voices. Nathan, who played the cat and the python to delicious effect on Monday evening, was a standout. John, the narrator, was difficult to hear at times, particularly when he tried to convey quiet and softness, but his enthusiasm for the material was often infectious. In sum, an engaging hour of classic literature. Cool and delightful. Like the popsicles the MET handed out after the show, as we emerged into the hot evening. What's not to like?
