Wiccans & Voodoo & Flying Monkeys, Oh My!

Posted on Jul 21, 2013

4 out of 5

Thought-provoking, funny and heartwarming, Wiccans in the 'hood packs an emotional punch. There's a lot going on in this hour-long look at race and religion. Take the time to unpack it and you'll understand why Michelle T. Johnson is a playwright to watch. She's got a gift for dialogue and character development. More than that, she's got a way with words. She covers topics that would ordinarily stop conversation--and yet with her approach, she gets people talking.

From the spiritual leader to the resident eighborhood watchwoman to those seeking spiritual relief from life's problems, I think there's a little bit of all of us in these characters. The play challenges us to set aside pre-conceived notions about the people we have chance encounters with. Not easy to do but as shown in this case, doing so can bring unexpected rewards. A show worth seeing.
